The National Psoriasis Foundation has dedicated the whole month of August to raise awareness regarding psoriasis. Psoriasis is defined by the CDC as a chronic autoimmune skin disease that speeds up the growth cycle of skin cells. Psoriasis affects 7.9 million people in the United States. Psoriasis causes patches of the skin to become red, raised and scaly. Psoriasis can appear anywhere on the body, but frequently appears on the elbows, knees and scalp.
